Federal Resume Guide 2026: How to Write a USAJOBS Resume That Gets Referred
Why a federal resume is different
A private-sector resume is a one- or two-page highlight reel. A federal resume is evidence. HR specialists check your application against the qualifications in the job announcement, and if your resume doesn't clearly show the required specialized experience, you may not be referred to the hiring manager, however qualified you are.
What to include
Complete contact details and citizenship status, if the announcement asks for it.
For each job: employer, title, start and end dates (month and year), hours per week, and the series and grade if it was a federal position.
Detailed accomplishments that match the duties and specialized experience in the announcement.
Education, certifications, training, and clearances that apply to the job.
Match the announcement, line by line
Read the Qualifications and the 'Specialized Experience' paragraph carefully. Each requirement should be clearly supported somewhere in your resume, using the announcement's own language where it truthfully describes your work. Assessment questionnaires often ask you to rate yourself as an expert, and your resume has to back that rating up.
Show results, not just duties
Use the context, action, result structure: what was the situation, what did you do, and what changed? 'Reduced claim backlog 32% in six months by redesigning intake workflow for a 12-person team' says far more than 'responsible for claims processing.'
Common mistakes
Submitting a two-page private-sector resume.
Leaving out hours per week or dates.
Using one generic resume for every announcement.
Listing duties without measurable results.
